How did you get started in this profession, and what do you enjoy most about it? My passion for landscaping started with our first home, where I tackled a full landscape project. We’ve renovated each home this way, always evolving the landscape. I love container gardening but especially enjoy updating established landscapes, adding layers to meet client goals while keeping maintenance practical.
Where do you find inspiration when starting a new design? Travel is my biggest inspiration. Wherever I go, from Chicago to Cabo, I’m always on the lookout for new plant varieties and design ideas, taking photos and making notes.
When designing for a client, how do you balance their preferences with your creative vision? Clients often have sentimental plants they want incorporated, and I try to include those. I always try to incorporate these meaningful elements when possible. Most clients also give me creative freedom to design.
How often do you redesign planters, and do you use all new plants or keep some existing ones? I refresh planters up to three times a year—fall, spring, and sometimes mid-summer. I try to keep thriving elements in each redesign.
What is your favorite "filler, thriller, and spiller" combination? Walking iris is my favorite filler; for thrillers, I love fall ornamental peppers with their vibrant colors. For spillers, I use ivy varieties like glacier, fig, and English for their unique draping.
What is the most challenging and rewarding part of your work? The challenge is helping clients feel confident about growing plants in any setting. The reward is seeing progress photos of their thriving landscapes and containers.
